Challenge
Air pollution is a major issue in Peristeri, one of the most densely populated districts in Western Athens. With heavy traffic, public transport hubs, and industrial activity contributing to rising pollution levels, fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) often exceeds recommended safety limits.
Commuters waiting at metro stations and bus stops are exposed to poor air quality daily. Residential areas near these transport hubs also experience pollution buildup, affecting long-term air quality for families and vulnerable populations. Without intervention, these conditions increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases among residents and visitors.
Solution
To help improve air quality, a clean air zone was established in Peristeri, featuring nine PAMARES air purification units. To enable real-time pollution monitoring, ten Airly sensors were installed in the surrounding area, tracking PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter pollution.
These purification units were strategically placed in metro stations, bus stops, and residential areas based on air quality data and pedestrian activity to maximize impact. By continuously filtering the air and removing fine particulate matter, the initiative aimed to reduce exposure to airborne pollutants and align with WHO standards and European air quality norms.
This project was carried out in collaboration with Politis Group, StaticAir’s long-term distributor in Greece, and aligns with similar initiatives showcased by Airly in Athens.
